What to Bring?
Comfortable hiking footwear
Food and water
Appropriate clothing if you plan on entering temples (no bare shoulders or legs)
We will meet at 9:45am on the South side of Chiang Mai University on Suthep Rd before it turns into Suthep Alley. From there it is a pleasant and beautiful walk to Wat Phalad. This section of the hike takes about 30 minutes and winds through a dense tropical forest, crossing a small, clear creek several times.
Wat Phalad is a quiet, serene and utterly breathtaking temple full of mystery at every turn. If you are looking for a shorter hike, it is recommended you turn around here and head back to Chiang Mai University.
If, however, you are looking for something a little more rigorous join us on the continuation of the hike up to Doi Suthep Temple. This section of the hike is extremely steep and grueling, taking about an hour to get to the top. We will regroup at the base of the temple where one can buy fresh guava juice, bananas, mangos and an assortment of other treats to refuel.
Doi Suthep Temple is several hundred steps above and costs about $1 to enter. If you plan on doing so, please be sure to bring required attire with you. After relaxing at Doi Sutthep feel free to either group together for a songtao back down the mountain or return to the trail and hike back down. The hike back down takes about an hour.
Remember to bring a 1-2 liters of water and some dense fuel like dates to keep powered-up! You may want a hat and/or strong footwear. Several have hiked this in bare feet, but this is NOT recommended if you don’t have much bare foot experience.
